The Love Of Ants And Bees

Poem written 4-29-24.

Behold! A lifetime spent,
Tilting at every windmill,
Clapping for every faerie,
Believing—most of all—in love

Promises made in youth, 
To people barely remembered,
From a girl I barely was,
To share a love eternal

But that love was foxfire,
Shedding cracks of light,
That shone and sparkled,
But not a fingertip of warmth

And now I find myself,
Mazed and stricken,
My weakness on display,
To all who wish to witness

This dame in foolish armor,
Fighting battles with shadows,
Recounting tales of love,
That have no heroes

Left unhappily to myself,
My bruised and tired eyes,
Turn to the tireless love,
Of ants and bees

A love which walks slowly,
Which inches forward,
Which gets to the future,
One step at a time
