Background
I grew up with magick around me, and then I still had to grow into it.
My father was Anthony “Dragon” Spurlock of the Feri tradition of witchcraft. My mother, while never as dedicated as he was, took me to my first rituals, taught me my first spells, and for my 12th birthday, bought me “Modern Magick” by Donald Michael Kraig. I worked through that over the next year, during which I also discovered a strong resonance with the work of Aleister Crowley and the spiritual tradition of Thelema.
Over the next several years, I grew as much as I could, but it was only when I met my primary teacher in 1996 that I truly began to bloom. During the year of my probation, he spent a few hours of almost every day with me, helping me grow in knowledge, wisdom, and power, and at the end of that year I took my neophyte oaths to the magickal and mystical order known as the A∴A∴ and I have worked within that system since.
From 1998-2000, I was the manager at 13: Real Magick in Santa Cruz, California. After that, I helped found the Sacred Grove (also then in Santa Cruz) in 2000 and worked there until 2003, when I completed my Abramelin Operation. The resulting insights led to me returning to school, where I majored in both mathematics and philosophy, specializing in logic and philosophy of science, respectively. I graduated with high honors from UCSC in 2008, and the focus of my work since has been on trying to establish a modern philosophy of magick.
My Saturn Return hit me hard, and chronic illness laid me low for several years, until in 2019 I was able to return to the Great Work properly. Since then I have worked equally within both the traditions of ceremonial magick and witchcraft, splitting my time between the Reclaiming Witchcraft Tradition, which combines the magickal tradition of my father with my deeply held political and ethical convictions, and the larger family of ceremonial magick traditions that I have been devoted to since my youth.
In 2020, I was introduced to the goddess Aphrodite during a class taught by Irisanya Moon. I became increasingly devoted to Her and, in 2021, I was ordained as Her priestess and, to my great honor, I continue to serve to this day.
In 2023, I began the Substack blog Without Authority, where I write about magick, mysticism, and pursuing the spiritual life. I post homilies every New Moon, Full Moon, and sabbat, poetry and essays every Wednesday, and the occasional polemic when something gets me good and angry. Nothing is ever paywalled, though subscriptions are appreciated.
In 2025, I founded Magie Sans Frontières (Magick Without Borders), an international organization of spirits and mages that provides protection, healing, and prosperity magick for those threatened by the forces of authoritarianism, bigotry, and colonialism. Since then we have grown in number and power, with members in the USA, UK, Spain, and Japan, and continue to seek our goal of the Road To Dawn, the path through our current political, economic, social, and environmental crisis where as many people as possible can live, be free, and thrive.
